COMPANY IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM
The Company in Residency Program is designed to give small circus or theatrical circus companies an opportunity to workshop the creation of a new work or revise an existing piece of work over a three-week period, taking advantage of our amazing training space as well as our artistic and technical staff. Companies can either apply for a Creation Residency to begin the process of writing, developing, and staging a first draft of their vision, or a Performance Residency to revise an existing work in progress that’s ready to be edited, revised, and polished.

PROGRAM DETAILS
WHAT IS THE PROGRAM?
Our Company in Residence program supports the creation of new work, or the revision of an existing work, in a 3 week training supported by our artistic and technical staff.
- Creation Residency: For companies with a rough vision of their creative goals who will begin the process of writing, developing and staging a “first draft” of their show.
- Performance Residency: For companies with a ‘work in progress’ ready for editing, revising and polishing.
NECCA is dedicated to supporting emerging American based performance companies to create and refine productions with circus as their primary modality.
WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM INCLUDE?
- Approximately 40 hrs of training per week for three weeks in one or both of our circus facilities.
- Guidance from a director or creative consultant to help shape the company’s artistic vision.
- Guidance from a production mentor including technical & business support.
- A final show or presentation including Q&A session with audience.
- Support staff for the final show or presentation.
- Video & photo of the final performance.
- Lodging for up to eight company &/or crew members.
WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM NOT INCLUDE?
- Physical circus skills training. For company members looking for additional skills coaching, lessons can be arranged separately for an additional fee.
- Circus equipment—companies must provide their own.
- Performance liability and health insurance for every performer (both are required).
- A stage manager (required for a performance residency to coordinate rehearsal and tour logistics).
- A sound technician (required for the performance residency to run sound for the final show/presentation). This can also be the stage manager.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Any performance company based in the United States that:
- has at least 50% American cast & crew.
- utilizes some form of circus art in their work.
- has any kind of artistic vision, from traditional to contemporary, as long as it contains circus.
WHEN CAN THE RESIDENCIES TAKE PLACE?
Contact Elsie Smith here to find out possible dates for 2020.
WHO ARE THE DIRECTORS OR CREATIVE CONSULTANTS?
We work collaboratively with the company in residence to find a director, dramaturg, or creative consultant that will best fit the company’s specific needs. This role can take on a variety of forms, from full directing and devising to someone that asks the right questions to help shape and clarify an already codified artistic vision.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
50% of this program’s costs are covered by the NEA ArtWorks grant. The remaining fee to the company is $3700 including lodging. Performers local to Brattleboro who provide their own housing will be discounted the lodging fees. A 50% deposit is due upon acceptance, with the remaining balance due two weeks before the residency begins.
